Cascades Shopping Centre is based in the heart of Portsmouth, and was once known as a community hub that locals gathered to. In recent years it has been taking a down turn. Less footfall has meant less desirability for retailers, and many have simply taken their stores elsewhere.

Portsmouth is known for its banter(y) humour and a “keep calm and carry on” attitude, which presented a great opportunity to have some fun when marketing the centre.

The goal was not to hide away from the problems the centre has been having over the past few years, but instead to embrace, acknowledge and have a laugh about them.

Marketing Campaign

Cascades Shopping Centre

Large billboard in Cascades car park reading: "Yep, that's right. This used to be the food court. It might be the worst thing we did... but now we have a Primark!"Poster in cascades car park reading: "This is boring, don't look at this. Go do some shopping instead. Lifts are that way."Poster in cascades shopping centre showing a child eating a sandwich. This poster is very old and hasn't changed for over a decade.Poster in cascades shopping centre. This poster is replacing the one of the child eating a sandwich and reads "Reckon that kid ever finished his sandwich? If you know, you know."Poster in stair case reading " The stairway to heaven. Maybe just take the lift."Billboard over an empty shop unit reading "We put this here to hide the empty shop. Just keep walking... you'll find some soon."Poster in cascades car park reading: "This is boring, don't look at this. Go do some shopping instead. Lifts are that way."Poster on the lift doors reading "As legend goes, on a rainy day, you can look down on those using the NCP car park getting absolutely drenched. Bunch of dinlos"

The campaign really focused on in-situ billboards and posters which could easily be photographed and shared via social media using the #cascadesisdecent hashtag, which, in itself, is a play on Pompey slang.

The design language lets the copy sing, and not take centre stage itself. Very simple, yet effective type and layout.

Poster in the centre reading "this is a weird little space, isn't it?? Anyone know what it's for?"Digital poster in the centre showing a live social feed from twitter.

Embracing Cascades problems, acknowledging them and having a laugh about it. A self-deprecating campaign.
